What is your favorite thing about traveling?

I like being a part of a new culture. Before I even venture off onto an adventure I’ll research spots that aren’t as tourist driven as others. For me, I want to get to know the area like a local does. It’s exciting to get immersed in the traditions and history of a place while also enjoying quieter locations with less crowds.

Is traveling something you consider a hobby or a lifestyle? How did you get started?

I suppose it’s a hobby since I’m not able to wander off for months at a time! I tend to work a lot, and sometimes I’ll find myself working outside of normal business hours too. But since I get to travel a few times a year I’m ok with not jetsetting somewhere all summer long.

Do you have any exciting travel dates or itinerary planned for the future?

This year was a little different for me as I didn’t travel as much as I usually do. But in November my wife and I will be going to Hawaii to surf and explore some fun hiking trails along a volcano or two! We’ve only been once before so we’re excited to try the food again and see some of the islands we didn’t have a chance to go to last time.

What are some travel tips you’d give to an inexperienced traveler?

Stay hydrated! No, really. It’s something I was not the greatest at but have found it to be so helpful, especially if you’re going to traveling for more than 4 hours. I would say pack an empty water bottle with you to be safe.

Try to also pack appropriate clothing for weather. If you’re going somewhere where the weather changes frequently, or you’re going to be in the city one day and then out in the mountains, you’re going to need different attire for each setting. Don’t underestimate how hot or cold a place can get!

Where would you like to go?

I haven’t made my way to Thailand yet. That’s one place I think I would really enjoy. I’ve heard how great the food is and want to try it out. In Santa Monica we have good Thai spots, but I know it’s nothing compared to the original place it comes from. I want to experience it in a vastly different setting.

Where would you like to revisit?

I’ve been to Peru a few times now and I think I’d really enjoy going back. I always have a great time there but I haven’t been able to see the whole country yet. I’ve only stayed in the capital which is off the coast and I want to see more of the inland region.

Do you travel alone? Why?

I usually travel with my wife or in a small group of friends. It just depends on timing and who is able to take a small break from work. It’s nice to experience new places with others so you can reminisce later about it.

If you could pick the top three places every person should go, what would they be?

I’d have to say it comes down to London, Toronto, and Lima, Peru. Each place offers great experiences when you visit. I’m a city kid so I enjoy being in the “hub” of a state or country. London has so much history and there’s always a lot to do. The museums are incredible and walking down old cobblestone streets kind of sends you back in time.

Toronto is just beautiful in general. The people are always willing to help guide you around if you’re new and it’s also where I’ve had some of the best sushi hands down! And Peru has its own amazing culture and history that will give you countless of awesome photographic moments.

Do you travel light or do you pack up the house?

It usually depends on where I’m going. I somehow end up packing just enough so I guess I’m somewhere in between. If I travel with my wife I try to leave enough room in my suitcase so she can fit souvenirs and other trinkets she finds for our family.
