What is your favorite thing about traveling?
My favorite thing about traveling is immersing myself in another culture. Cultural diversity is part of the reason why I love living in the New York City area, and I feel like I always want to explore new areas when I travel. I have learned so much and brought back so many unique experiences.
Is traveling something you consider a hobby or a lifestyle? How did you get started?
Traveling is part hobby, part lifestyle for me. I do travel to meet clients in distant cities, but generally I stay in my studio and create graphic design work for them. I try to take at least one trip to a place I haven’t yet explored each year. I love to see new places and to meet new people.
I wish I could travel more, but I would miss my family if I couldn’t bring them along with me. I do occasionally have a work trip where I am able to bring the whole family. I went to Los Angeles recently and brought the family to Disneyland. My kids were so excited. Theme parks are not my idea of a great vacation, but it was awesome to see the looks of excitement on the kids’ faces.
Do you have any exciting travel dates or itinerary planned for the future?
We are going to China this spring. I am very excited to see the country and meet the people. I have a local guide lined up who will help me communicate and help me find the best lodging, restaurants, and things to do. We plan to start our trip in Beijing, and travel to Chongqing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. I love Chinese food, and I am excited about trying something truly authentic.
What are some travel tips you’d give to an inexperienced traveler?
I have many tips for inexperienced travelers. The first one is to make sure you pack electricity converters to use with your phone charger and other electronics. These are inexpensive online and they can make the difference between having a relaxing trip and a stressful one.
The next tip is to be careful with what you eat, at least for the first few days. If you stress your digestive system too much, you could be facing some sick time on your vacation which is no fun for anyone. Bottled water is a must in some areas of the world.
Finally, be sure that you leave enough room in your luggage for souvenirs. Shipping things back can get to be very expensive. It may even be smart to pack an empty suitcase inside your larger suitcase and use that for souvenirs. This is especially wise if you are traveling with kids or if your family likes to shop. You may have to pay an extra baggage fee when you return, but that is cheaper than shipping an equivalent weight.
Where would you like to go?
I would love to go to Antarctica, but that would probably be a solo trip. Polar exploration has always fascinated me. It would be exciting to see it up close.
Where would you like to revisit?
I love visiting all the classic cities in Europe. I had such a good time in Munich, and I really wasn’t expecting much from the city. I want to go back for Oktoberfest.
Do you travel alone? Why?
I travel alone for work, but most of the time I bring my family. I don’t really enjoy traveling alone. If I have to do so, I bring a lot of good movies and books on my tablet. It can be a chance to catch up on my reading and to finally get into my “to be watched” list.
If you could pick the top three places every person should go, what would they be?
New York City, Paris, and San Francisco. These cities will give you a good representation of what a big city can be.
Do you travel light or do you pack up the house?
I tend to travel light, especially when I am traveling alone. Traveling with kids means taking a lot of stuff. I try to make sure they only bring the essentials, but it seems that I am always lugging someone’s heavy carry-on bag.
