Born in Austin, Texas, Bennet Schwartz moved to Australia to fulfill a lifelong dream of moving to the Southern Hemisphere. Schwartz began his career as a creative director in Austin, Texas, before taking his life on the road. Bennet Schwartz decided on a creative career while in high school and continued down this path during his college days. After moving from graphic design into the creative director field, Bennet Schwartz decided to see as much of the U.S. as possible. His love of travel eventually brought him to Australia, where he moved in 2020 to embark on a new adventure.
Outside his work as a creative director, Schwartz is a committed cyclist and motorcycling enthusiast. The love of riding on two wheels stayed with Bennet Schwartz from childhood through to his adult life. One of the main attractions for Schwartz, when he decided to move to Australia, was to spend more time exploring the world on two wheels. What is your favorite thing about traveling?
I think the traveling bug is something that gets under your skin and keeps calling you. I spent my early Life and college days in Texas and dreamed of escaping to far-flung locations. When I finished college, I set up as a freelance design specialist in Austin and was successful relatively quickly. Once I set out on my first business trip in the U.S., I knew I wanted to travel more and experience as many cultures as possible. Experiencing new places and cultures is the reason I travel. Even when I return to places I know well; I make a point to experience new people and places.
Is traveling something you consider a hobby or a lifestyle? How did you get started?
Traveling is a lifestyle for me. I spent so long on the road for my work in the U.S. that it became a way of life. There is so much to enjoy in the world, I don’t think you can be a committed traveler taking two weeks’ vacation each year. I started traveling for work and didn’t stop until I moved the Sydney to make a new life.
Do you have any exciting travel dates or itinerary planned for the future?
I had lots of plans to travel in 2021, but these have been put on hold by the pandemic. When the pandemic is under control, I plan to explore more of Australia by seeing the Bush and taking a trip to Tasmania. Australia is located in a wonderful location for traveling to Asia. One of my dreams has been to travel to Tokyo and experience the unique design of the city.
What are some travel tips you’d give to an inexperienced traveler?
I think I learned to be open to new experiences pretty quickly as a traveler, but some people find that hard to do. If I could give any advice it would be to make sure you are open to meeting new people, trying new foods, and expanding your horizons. On a practical level, do not overpack. I see lots of people with huge suitcases who want to travel but seem weighed down by their past.
Where would you like to go?
Like I said earlier, Tokyo has always been a dream location for me. I also hope to get to Eastern Europe in the future because I want to explore the mix of old and new. Another city I have always wanted to visit in Istanbul, I enjoyed reading “Dracula” as a teenager and love the imagery of the meeting of east and west at a single location.
Where would you like to revisit?
At some point, I will go back to Austin to visit my friends and family, but not yet. Sydney is my home and I want to build a life here. I spent some time in London working as a creative director and I would enjoy spending more time there.
Do you travel alone? Why?
The majority of my travels have been completed alone for business. I enjoy traveling alone because it allows me to experience lots of different things unhindered. That may sound selfish, but I don’t want to compromise on the experiences I have when I’m on my travels.
If you could pick the top three places every person should go, what would they be?
I guess I should include Sydney as a place everyone should visit because it is my new home. Sydney is a beautiful city; I am enjoying exploring on my bicycle and learning more about it.
I would also recommend taking a trip to my hometown of Austin, Texas. The Lone Star State has a reputation for being inhabited by cowboys, but Austin is very different, with a vibrant arts scene. The South by Southwest Festival is held there and brings some of the world’s top artists to the city.
Finally, I enjoyed the peaceful nature of the English Lake District. I have always loved the poetry of Wordsworth and enjoyed spending time in the deep valleys and beautiful countryside that inspired him. If you escape the main tourist areas, you can find hidden gems where art and nature collide.
Do you travel light or do you pack up the house?
Travel light. If I arrive at a place and it doesn’t grab my attention, I want to be able to pack up and move on in minutes. I like to take a backpack and be able to take a plane, train, or bus at a moment’s notice.
